Putney House

YEAR

2010

Putney House is a home for a retired couple who enjoy entertaining family and friends. The design is a deliberately simple form with purposeful recesses and projections that reflect the functions behind.

Sitting against the backdrop of a suburban street, its crisp lines and edges contrast with conventional houses that are often unnecessarily complex or boringly simple.

The house consists of 4 bedrooms, a reading room, family room, kitchen, and a large combined living and dining hall with a 4.2-metre ceiling.

In addition to adopting passive solar design principles, fireplace and heated floors have been strategically located to improve comfort as a more sustainable alternative to air-conditioning.

Atop the house is a naturally ventilated attic pod that overlooks the Parramatta River. It is used as a retreat or gym.
